Hunstman Cancer Institute and K-Bull 93

KUBL-FM, popularly known on-air as K-Bull 93, is a commercial country radio station owned by Cumulus Media that broadcasts regionally from Salt Lake City, Utah. K-Bull 93 holds an annual Radio-A-Thon to support the Huntsman Cancer Institute, a nationally recognized cancer research center that also offers outpatient care for children and adults afflicted with cancer.

The Challenge

For the Radio-A-Thon’s 10th anniversary in 2012, K-Bull 93 was in need of a telecom provider to donate 10 local phone lines. Organizers faced the challenge of establishing reliable lines capable of handling large calling capacity, without which they would be unable to reach their goals of increasing the total donation amount. K-Bull 93 was encouraged by a current client to contact Veracity Networks about the charitable donation of its communication services. Veracity Networks assisted similar charitable radio events, such as the Sub for Santa program at United Way of Utah County.

Local Solution

Veracity Networks willingly accepted to help K-Bull 93 with the Huntsman Cancer Institute Radio-A-Thon. Veracity Networks donated 10 T1 phone lines for the event, allowing listeners throughout Utah and neighboring communities to call in during the event’s 36 hours. The 2012 event marked the first time the Radio-A-Thon featured patients sharing personal stories on-air through remote broadcasts from the Huntsman Cancer Institute, which would add a more personal response from its regional listeners.
“We were very happy to have Veracity Networks as a partner for the 2012 Huntsman Cancer Institute Radio-A-Thon,” said Tandy Baker, Promotions Director of K-Bull 93. “Veracity Networks helped supplement the telecom costs, which allowed 100 percent of the donations to go directly toward cancer research. The Radio-A-Thon is the most important 36 hours our station spends each year, and we appreciate Veracity’s valuable contribution that also made it important to our listeners.”

World-Class Results

On February 3 and February 4, K-Bull listeners opened their wallets and hearts to support national cancer research and local cancer patients. Through Veracity’s donated phone lines, talk radio’s Glenn Beck called into the Radio-A-Thon with Huntsman Cancer Institute’s principal benefactor, Jon M.Huntsman, and donated $100,000. Local KUTV anchor Mary Nickles visited the Radio-A-Thon to talk about her current battle with breast cancer and the importance of every dollar received. K-Bull 93 also challenged listeners to call in to donate $100 during a specific time frame to have certain DJs shave their heads. Because of generous donors in the community and beyond, K-Bull 93 and the Huntsman Cancer Institute closed the Radio-A-Thon with a grand total of $667,010, accomplishing their goal of exceeding the donation total of previous years and providing cancer patients with the resources they need.
